Way back I earned my PhD looking at creating expression in virtual characters (in VR) @uclcs with @melslater.

I even made a page about my research about 90% of the way through it: https://t.co/RBG5rKXojx
Got some prize or other for it ☺️
Feels like a century ago! https://t.co/FOA5mKpBIB
Neither of my parents had a PhD!

My brilliant dad wanted one but opted to save up for his daughters higher education as international students instead.
So my incredibly astute mom made me believe that I wanted a PhD at the age of 12!
I was homeschooled.#lifestories 💕 https://t.co/UBBxVi8yn9
I had this conversation with @melslater because my mom got tired of telling folks that I was still a student… it was like a @PHDcomics strip.

“What do I need to do in order to start writing up?”
In my case there was a straightforward answer 🧐 https://t.co/MuDFfdqc30 pic.twitter.com/06OGtF7Wdx
A Cave on a slide!

In a way, I feel lucky to have conducted my PhD in VR @uclcs with @melslater and @anthony_steed, back when I did, using a CAVE-like system.
If I was doing it now, I might have opted for a portable light-weight HMD, which are great but maybe not as magical 🙂 pic.twitter.com/jMpDT5h31q
The Doctoral Consortium was a fun event @ACMIMX. Thanks @asreen and @niteshg for organising it all.

The colourful images were taken in one of the three photobooths to be found at the #ACMIMX venue on @ohyayco pic.twitter.com/LrGqlnGUmp
In addition to #chi2021 shenanigans & organising @acmimx 2021, I also turned an year older (& a tad wiser).

Flowers from @chandru1975, a card from the spawn, a surprise from @arcticpenguin💕 & a memory of wearing silly hats from @melslater…
Looking forward to 🍷 later. pic.twitter.com/h6RJY1kuaF
I don’t even remember what the application process was like in 2001 @uclcs.
— 🕷 Dr. Vinoba Vinayagamoorthy (@What2DoNext) January 1, 2021
I like to think @melslater would still take me on as a student if I applied as a 21 year old now.
I hadn’t even heard of VR back then! I had a brilliant degree and work placements but that was it. 🤷🏽♀️ https://t.co/zPGKLWAaZS
Ooo Crayola Land (?) in a CAVE… followed by the virtual pit in a HMD… @anthony_steed or @melslater might have images?
— 🕷 Dr. Vinoba Vinayagamoorthy (@What2DoNext) November 25, 2020
I wish I had gotten them when I was @uclcs.
In modern times, Tilt Brush of course 😊 https://t.co/zkdl4POFIL
In the grand scheme of things, your PhD is a drop in the ocean w.r.t knowledge you contribute to humanity and lessons you personally learn. https://t.co/1C1p84YRml

I still have mine in a hard drive somewhere 😂 #phdchat #AcademicChatter

13.5 years later.
Last week I whipped out my thesis to demonstrate a workable structure for a colleague @BBCRD who is currently in the middle of a doctoral programme. https://t.co/BFNWq5tSrY
Thanks @wgaver and colleagues for hosting @libbymiller and I today. Here’s a bit of nostalgic tech from my old doctoral life with @anthony_steed (and @melslater) #TheDriftTableStillLives pic.twitter.com/CasrNYxIyS

From 2001 – a dive world built for a study, working with @melslater, @pigselated @BenjaminLok, @anthony_steed looking at “collaboration in tele-immersive environments” where a person @uclcs with another @unc (across the pond) carried a stretcher together.

Excellent talk by Jeremy Bailenson of @StanfordVR about good uses of VR!
— 🕷 Dr. Vinoba Vinayagamoorthy (@What2DoNext) April 26, 2018
I cited him in my doctoral work ~15 years ago, so it was great to meet him @DigiCatapult and talk about all things VR.
Also got my first signed book! Thanks for the lovely words 🙂 pic.twitter.com/2oiIG0jD84
“Public speaking in virtual reality: facing an audience of avatars” by @melslater, D-P Pertaub & @anthony_steed (1999/3)…https://t.co/sD23l2161t

Nothing dramatic or edgy, just normal user responses to everyday life things in VR with very simple virtual characters. ❤️ pic.twitter.com/XbC3DJepwd
Thank you @asreen for the invite to be on a panel @dig_futures with @marylgray @mcgregor_moira & @sahartahvili talking about going into industry after getting yourself a PhD: https://t.co/bRJoUWF7yh
